Tractor Trailer Safety What would you do?
It is no wonder that more and more advocates for tractor trailer safety are crying in an all out plea for safer roads. Next time you are driving down any US highway look over at the slider box under the semi trailer you are passing and see if the slider pins are retracted. Do this both on your way to and from work tomorrow and keep track of the results. More trailers than you would like to see have the slider pins retracted instead of in an engaged position as proper operation would dictate. The result... roads that are much less safer than they should
be.
Road safety begins with...you guessed it, those dreaded M, T, and B words. Maintenance, training, and buy-in. Lets
start with maintenance.
Without proper maintenance it is impossible for trailer safety to occur. All of the high tech gadgets like ABS and anti-roll stability are useless if it fails to work in a time of need due to improper maintenance. You can think of trailer maintenance as the foundation of your safety program. To make a good foundation you need to add the proper ingredients. The ingredients for this foundation are annual FHWA inspections, pre-trip inspections and post-trip inspections, and preventative maintenance. |
